Purple People Eater
Life is busy, i suppose. I read a bunch of Christmas cards and nearly each one had an aura of business (or bluntly said, "we've been soooooo busy." Life is full of stuff to do, everyone has hard days, and life is rough. Each card presented business in a semi-glorified light and yet complained about it. Did each writer want people to know they had been busy - as if being busy is a sign of success or arrival? On the other hand, there was also a sense of complaint. The letters also portrayed busy-ness like ugly harmony (would that be disonance?) to life. Obviously, no one likes to be busy; or at least everyone acts like they do not want to be busy.
I am realizing that life is about relationships (ok...so there's a bit more to life, but...) i've missed several classes because i just happened to meet someone in front of the Beej or in the hallway and participated in a conversation. Was class more important?
As my brother put it, "The elderly, they've got it figured out. Hang out with people, visit your family...and, dare I say it, mooch off the government. Nahhh, they earned it."
Why do people wait to be elderly to really slow down, enjoy life, and invest in each other? I'm not willing to wait that long...
That reminds me of something i just read by Wendell Berry. Here, he is writing about workers building stone fences before they had machines.
"They talked as they worked. They joked and laughed. They sang. The work was axacting and heavy and hard and slow. No opportunity for pleasure was missed or slighted. The days and years were long. The work was long. At the end of this job the next would begin. Therefore, be patient. Such pleasure as there is, is here, now. Take pleasure as it comes. Take work as it comes. The end may never come, or when it does it may be the wrong end."
So enjoy life because God is good even when shit hits the fan.
On that note, I'm heading to Des Moines for a bunch of days to sit around and listen to people enjoy life together.
I guess that's it for today
